Phuket tourist information

Travel Phuket

If you're planning a holiday to Phuket, before you leave you should gather as much useful information about the island. Apart from places to stay and sites to see, you need to know who you can turn to if you need help once you have arrived at your destination.

While most good hotels and resorts do have information desks, it is a good idea to find out where additional information centers are. These will usually be able to supply you with free brochures and pamphlets that will give you a better idea of the places you plan to visit. They will also be able to advise on the best routes and any issues in a particular area you may need to know about.

Information Centers

You will find that there are information centers in all the major centers on Phuket as well as most of the large shopping centers. Some are better than others.

The island's official tourist information center is located at 191 Thalang Road, Tambon Thaladyai, Amphoe Mueang. Telephone +66 (0)76 211 036/217 138/212 213.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand is located in Bangkok.

Transportation on Phuket

When you arrive at Phuket International Airport, your first step is going to be to get to wherever it is you have decided to stay. While many hotels and resorts offer shuttle services for their guests, many tourists opt to hire their own transportation for the duration of their stay (cars, motor bikes and bicycles are available). Your decision will probably be based on just how much of the island you plan to explore. Taxis operate in most areas, but a ticking meter can end up costing you lots and lots of Thai Bahts.

Alternatively you might opt to catch a tourist bus. Open-top buses run between the capital, Phuket Town, and many of the leading resorts, and micro or mini-buses run within the Phuket Town area itself.

There are so many really stunning destinations within Phuket, it is quite possible to spend an entire holiday in one area, walking where you need to go, and never ever getting bored, or wanting to travel further afield – except perhaps to one or more of the islands, in which case you can catch a ferry.

The options are almost endless for visitors searching for accommodation in Phuket, ranging from 5 star resorts to backpackers hostels. It makes sense to start by deciding where on the island you would like to stay, as different areas offer different styles of accommodation suited to different types of travelers. Phuket accommodation can be found on HotelsCombined.

The Thai currency is the Baht, which might make you feel rich while you're there, since you'll get round about 30 Thai Baht for one US dollar (although it does, of course, depend on the exchange rate).

Banking hours are much the same as Western countries, with banks usually operating Monday to Friday from 8.30 am until 3.30 pm. Similarly some branches will be open on Saturdays, and some open until early evening, usually to accommodate tourists. Generally you will find that booths where you can exchange currency are open 12 hours a day, seven days a week. There are also numerous ATMS where you can use internationally accepted credit and debit cards to draw money 24:7.

Like banks, shops and businesses in Phuket generally follow an international norm, operating from 9 am until 5 pm during the week, and from 9 am until midday on Saturdays. Some shops and stores open later (10-11 am) and then continue trading into the night.

Useful Phone Numbers

First off you need to keep the telephone numbers of your accommodation venue at hand. Once there, they will be able to advise who you should phone if you need assistance of any sort. But here are a few numbers you should note, just in case:
